Elder abuse affects families across Northern Manitoba. MMPF delivers free workshops in The Pas, OCN, and surrounding communities — helping seniors, caregivers, and families recognize warning signs and know where to turn.
What Is Elder Abuse?
Elder abuse is any action — or lack of action — that causes harm or distress to an older person. It can happen in any family, any community, and in any relationship of trust. In northern communities, isolation, cultural barriers, and limited resources can make it harder to recognize and report.
Physical Abuse
Hitting, pushing, or using physical force. Also includes withholding necessary medication or care.
Financial Abuse
Taking money, property, or benefits without consent. Forging signatures or changing wills under pressure.
Emotional Abuse
Threats, humiliation, isolation, or controlling behaviour that damages an elder’s sense of worth.
Neglect
Failing to provide food, warmth, medical care, or personal hygiene to someone in your care.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Unexplained bruises, cuts, or injuries
- Sudden changes in financial accounts or property
- Withdrawal from family, friends, or usual activities
- Fearfulness around a specific person or caregiver
- Unpaid bills despite having sufficient income
- Poor hygiene or lack of basic necessities
- Changes to legal documents like a will or power of attorney
Our Free Workshops
MMPF’s Protecting Our Elders workshops are free to attend and designed for northern communities. Sessions are interactive, culturally sensitive, and held in accessible community spaces. Participants learn to recognize abuse, have honest conversations, and connect with local supports.
