Featured Workshop

Protecting Our Elders in the North

An interactive, community-based workshop designed for Northern Manitoba. Seniors, caregivers, and community members come together to understand elder abuse, challenge ageism, and build practical skills for safe community response.

What the Program Is

This workshop supports communities to prevent harm and strengthen dignity, safety, and wellbeing for older adults. Using guided discussion and interactive, scenario-based learning, participants explore what elder abuse looks like in everyday life, how it can escalate, and what supportive action looks like. The approach is respectful and practical β€” focused on shared responsibility rather than blame. No drama or theatre experience is required.

Why This Matters in Northern Manitoba

Elder abuse can be harder to identify and address in northern, rural, and remote settings where distance, limited services, transportation barriers, isolation, and caregiving pressures reduce access to support. Close-knit community dynamics can make it difficult to speak up or seek help. Ageism β€” treating older adults as less deserving of autonomy β€” can increase risk and silence those affected. This workshop helps communities recognize these patterns, talk about them openly, and practice safe steps toward support and prevention.
